Q & A with Timeflies

Timeflies

How did you two get started together? When? Where? Why?
We met in college, Rez was in a funk band and asked Cal to be the singer - after a bunch of shows at Tufts we ended up breaking away to start Timeflies our senior year.
Where are you guys from? Where are you currently?
Cal's from Larchmont NY, and Rez from Montclair NJ - currently doin it big in Brooklyn.
What are you currently working on?
We're working on a bunch of new material, a little more sample based which is exciting for us.  That, Timeflies Tuesdays, and a lot of shows have been keeping us pretty busy.
Cal - how did you get started musically? Voice lessons? Childhood?
I've been singing since I was little, freestyling at the dinner table.  Wasn't really trained or anything but in college as a music major my instrument was voice so I got more serious then.
Rob - how did you start producing? Connections? Childhood?
I built a recording studio in my basement to record bands I was in during highschool and got pretty comfortable with Pro Tools, in college started getting more into electronic stuff and fooling around with Reason. DJed a lot through college which always gave me the opportunity to play my own remixes and stuff and stay current with what got places to really pop off.

Tell me about your debut album The Scotch Tape. I loved it by the way.
Thanks! Well it was sort of what we started working on right after graduating for that whole summer, few different locations but basically in a room locked down working.  After a lot of hard work we ended up with a 10 track + interlude project that had come from many nights with a bottle of scotch so we thought the name was fitting.  It ended up getting way higher than we'd expected on itunes which was awesome, really exciting to see our fans step up and support us.
How did you come up with the name Timeflies?
Earlier in college we spent a lot of time recording stuff that we wanted to put out but never really finished because we were so busy with other stuff.  Would always mean to get back to it but felt like something would always come up for one of us, or we'd start hanging out with friends in the studio (Rez's room) and not get much done.  Wanted to remind ourselves that the music should always come first and that you can lose weeks and months without getting anything done if you don't focus on whats important.  Especially now with all the shows and other stuff we have going on, its a great reminder to get in the studio.
How do you describe Timeflies as a label/genre/etc?
Genre is always difficult for us because we try to not limit ourselves to one sound and bring in aspects of all the different music we like.  When we have to really force ourselves we usually say electro hop-pop, which is a nice way of combining three of our bigger influences into one.
Have you performed any shows? Where? When? If not, do you plan to? Any tours?
We play a lot of shows, recently around three a week probably.  Our last couple have been Highline Ballroom in NYC, Hobart William Smith, and Westpoint.  Next week we have two shows around UNH, Colby, and a show with The Cataracts at Keene St. We're on the road most of the week, but its pretty all over the place. In terms of a more organized tour we're looking to do that in the Spring after hopefully releasing another project.
By the way, are you guys interested in any southern shows or concerts at some southern colleges/parties?
We love the south. A lot. Charleston and UGA we're some of our favorite shows we've played, we're excited to go back.

What are your musical aspirations?
Keep doing what we're doing. Making music, playing shows, and getting to interact with our fans.
Do you guys have any favorite artists?
Shepard Fairey. But really.
Have you worked with any other artists?
We've done collabs with Loggy and Mike Stud, hopefully do some more work with other people in the future but we've been doing a lot of solo stuff right now.
Any memorable moments so far in Timeflies?
Many. Think our favorite was at a show in Dayton Ohio, Rez's laptop fell in the middle of the show, screen went dark and we didn't know if it would turn back on.  Rez started beat boxing, mic in one hand, trying to fix the computer with his other.  Cal starts freestyling and the crowd was sort of loving the freestyle and freaking out with us at the same time.  Then just as Cal drops a big last line, Rez had fixed everything and dropped Under The Sea.  So the steel drum comes on and everyone is going crazy and both of us are kind of laughing it off but also so happy that the laptop turned back on. Afterwards people were sure we had done it on purpose which was funny because what artist would ever kick their laptop off the stage.  Awesome though.
I see you're not signed yet, why not (if you care to explain)?
We've been doing everything ourselves and at this point just haven't been interested in getting involved with a label.  We like that we're able to do everything from start to finish ourselves and its been working for us.  The industry is changing and we're trying to make sure we're leading the new wave.

Do you have any influences in general? Any in your music?
Of course, everything we listen to.  Rez tends to be more influenced by electro, dubstep, trance and that type of stuff.  Cal more by old school hip hop and blues.  But of course we listen to lots of indie rock, world music, classical (especially as music majors), jazz, and of course radio stuff.
How many tracks have you released?
At this point, not including Timeflies Tuesday, pretty sure its 15 or 16? With Timeflies Tuesday probably in the 50s.
Anything you want to tell your fans?
Keep using the internet to find music - we're huge supporters of blogs and think that this is really where the future is of music.  People spend their whole day finding the best stuff so that you can get home, go on their site, and have access to the best stuff out, so take advantage of it.
